Wes Craven taunts with suggestion that this film will house an all new signature villain. But should Freddy Krueger really be that worried?

Slipping in just ahead of Horror icon Wes Cravens eagerly anticipated Scream 4 is another of his now trademark teenage slash fiestas. But will this seemingly tired tale of bloody revenge be the one that will again restore the old masters genre defining mojo.

My Soul to Take – Basic Plot and Cast

The film is set within sleepy small town Riverton, Massachusetts. It is here that sixteen years previously a now legendary serial killer was thought to have been killed, or was he? This is just the question haunting Adam "Bug" Heller (Max Thieriot) and his love crossed team of pretty teens. He is plagued with reoccurring dreams that center on his fathers insanity driven rampage years earlier. Does the blood lust also pump within his own veins or is it perhaps another of his group that simmers with uncontrollable rage?

Paulina Olszynski plays Brittany Cunningham and arrives via a resume dotted with television appearances. Nick Lashaway, a young Fox Mulder from TVs X-Files is cast as Brandon O'Neal. He the obligatory school sports star and prime candidate to be dealt a gruesome end.

John Magaro (Alex Dunkelman) plays Adams best friend and one characters with a decidedly darker edge, one honed by parental abuse. Emily Meade (Leah/Fang) is another of the films young stars that’s slowly but surely creeping onto the radar. She will appear next under the direction of Joel Schumacher in his upcoming thriller Twelve.

Who Is The New Freddy?

The gimmick within the plot is that these young central characters all share a birthday that coincides with the day that the, as yet unnamed, killer was himself killed. No, not exactly fizzing with novelty. It appears that the producers of My Soul to Take are more concerned with the introduction of a new addition to the serial slasher character role of honour than it is surrounding him with fresh plot. Sad, as an early Wes Craven (The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream) certainly had the innovation and stand apart style to do so.

But who is this new character with an insatiable taste for revenge? Very little information has been released albeit for Craven himself suggesting that this monster is a one that has lain for years in wait. Sustaining himself like an animal within the forest until the day that he can lay waste to those that have wronged him, or so the story goes.

A Craven Family Affair

Craven keeps it in the family with his wife Iya Labunka lending her hand to producing the film, here for the very first time. Additionally My Soul To Take will be yet another of cinemas latest releases to be unceremoniously dipped in the 3D pool. So prepare for shooting knives, hurling body parts and various other bloodied bits to come a flying. It may have to struggle with its now threadbare premise but this could still prove to be a fun ride.

My Soul To Take arrives in both 2 and 3D formats on October 8th, 2010.
